The 9-11 Project
What do you do when they don't remember?
problem to resolve: TEACHING IS NOT STATIC ENDEAVOR. I CHANGE WHAT AND HOW I TEACH BECAUSE MY STUDENTS HAVE DIFFERENT life experiences, NEEDS, AND DESIRES. For years, I could count on THESE YOUNG SPIRITS TO recalL VISCERALLY their memories of september 11th. WE HAD THE BENEFITS OF PROXIMITY to the historical events, and we all knew where we were...in school. It's the kind of event that leaves an indelible mark on one's psyche. However, in the past year or two, the memories and recollections of my students became more and more nebulous. the tenth anniversary of september 11th marked the first time my students were unable to recall.
They were three years old in 2001.
So what do you do when they don't remember?
Well, when we are living in an era of near unlimited access to the sum of human knowledge, students evolve from consumers to creators OF HISTORY.

U.S. HISTORY
creative Challenge: design and create a book, using blurb, with your classmates to honor and remember September 11th. In addition to the book, students wanted to create a documentary, dance, and or video to supplement their work.
Collaborators: 8th graders from the emerald team, ms. king, mrs. riemer, mrs, cook, Mrs. Mackey, and Mrs. Kelly
we are filled with gratitude that mrs. mackey invested in our project with her wisdom. She presented a workshop on copyright, fair use and transformativeness to help us understand the law and empower us in creating our projects.
We are honored that Mrs. Kelly invested the time and energy to edit our books and period 4's website. Her fast feedback and comments were insightful and instrumental in encouraging excellence.
special Thanks to Mrs. riemer and mrs. cook who are supporters in the classroom as aides as well as active learners and collaborators.
we are especially grateful to the support of Mr. Ramsey and the Jefferson Middle School PTA in funding the printing of our books.
Thank you to Dr. Walsh and Dr. davis for stopping by to visit our classroom and championing us along the way.
please take the time to peruse the books and provide feedback to these young artists, writers, poets, filmmakers, and junior historians.
